The Pictorial Book of Anecdotes and Incidents of the War of the Rebellion - Civil, Military, Naval and Domestic; Embracing the Most Brilliant and Remarkable Anecdotal Events of the Great Conflict in the United States: Heroic, Patriotic, Political, Romantic, Humorous and Tragical, from the Time of the Memorable Toast of Andrew Jackson “The Federal Union - It Must be Preserved!”, Uttered in 1830 in Presence of the Original Secession Conspirators, to the Assassination of President Lincoln and the End of the War with Famous Words and Deeds of Woman, Sanitary and Hospital Scenes, Prison Experiences, etc by Frazar Kirkland, published by subscription only, Hartford Publishing Co, Hartford, Conn, 1866, first edition, 6.25x9.5, 705 pgs, 300+ woodcut engravings by N Orr & Co, full leather binding. This interesting anecdotal account of the Civil War features the types of articles that would have appeared in the local newspapers of the time. Written by a Union sympathizer, it glorifies the patriotic acts in support of the stars and stripes and relates a broad range of relatively trivial events that occurred during the war. Topics range from individual acts of heroism to desertion, privation, women’s role in the war and minor events that influenced battle strategy. Accordingly this lengthy volume features such obscure information as the purchase (for $50) by General Ord of the marble-top table on which the papers were signed by Grant and Lee to end the war - General Custer purchased the smaller table on which the documents were prepared. More than 300 woodcut engravings add further interest to the extensive text - they depict both civilians and soldiers as well as domestic and battle scenes. Includes a “List of Battles, Engagements, Collisions, Captures, Surrenders, Surprises, etc” with the date the event occurred, a “List of Public Vessels to Which the Naval Anecdotes in this Work Relate” plus a listing of the “Chief Land and Naval Officers” of both the North and the South. The book concludes with an alphabetical index of the leading anecdotes and incidents with those related to acts of women in italics.

Condition: Only Fair condition with front cover detached, rear cover starting, chunks of leather missing from spine, scattered internal soil and foxing (heavy on some pages but text is still quite legible). Some of the tissue guards are intact - others are missing entirely or torn - there is also a tear at lower left of the engraving depicting naval battles. The only writing is the signatures of previous owners [this copy bears the signature of James M Wilkins 1883 Tucson in brown ink on the ffep plus a pencil signature JC ? Lupton 1890]. Other than the missing tissue guards the contents are complete and legible and still useful for reference.
