A New and Complete Set of Traverse Tables Shewing the Differences of Latitude and the Departures to Every Minute of the Quadrant, and to Five Places of Decimals Together With a Table of the Lengths of Each Degree of Latitude and Corresponding Degree of Longitude From the Equator to the Poles with other Tables Useful to the Surveyor and Civil Engineer by Captain JT Boileau, London: Wm H Allen & Co, 1839, vii + xlvi + 96 pgs + 3 fold-out plates, 6x9.5, wraps [cover missing], tables hand-colored with pale blue watercolors. This rare book was written by Captain John Theophilns Boileau of the Bengal Engineers - it was dedicated to the Court of Directors of the East India Company. This particular copy was owned by Peter Emslie, an important civil engineer working in the New York area from at least the 1830's to the 1860's. He is listed as the City Engineer for Buffalo, New York in 1860 and he published the Deed Atlas of the County of Erie along with field notes of the Cattaraugus and Buffalo Creek reservations. His signature in brown ink along with the 1859 date are on the blank page at the front [cover is missing]. A faint inscription on the preface page states that this copy was given by Emslie to his friend Gester and then passed down to a grandson who also became a civil engineer. There are several corrections to the tables written in ink within the margins. A scarce and rare item for the collector of historical items from the Buffalo, New York area as well as for collectors of antiquarian civil engineering books.
Condition: Only Fair condition: only a remnant of the original brown wrappers remains on the spine. The browned pages are somewhat brittle with some corner page folds, short edge tears and finger smudges. As previously mentioned, there are numerous corrections written in ink within the margins next to the tables.
