An old wooden box with a marquetry top with a classical music decoration featuring a bronze medal commemorating the life of Mozart inlaid on the lid. The 2" diameter medal, mounted on a lyre or music stand, was sculpted by R. Ruepp. WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART 1756-1791 surmounts the right-facing profile of Mozart with several opening notes of a musical score underneath. The box measures about 5 3/8" x 4 7/8" x 1 3/4" (exterior) - the inside bottom is only about 3/4" deep. I do not know what types of wood were used in the inlay. It weighs about 8 ozs unwrapped. NOTE: This box has a musical theme but it is NOT a music box.
Condition: There are some small cracks in the wood consistent with age and some discoloration to the surface of the medal. The wood finish also has a dry feel (I have not applied any type of polish or oil to the surface). The small decorative brass closure at the front works well (depress small button on top to open). In pencil on the base is written 74.75. Lastly, there is a slightly sweet odor to the interior which I cannot detect when the hinged lid is closed.
