Catalogue No.5 of the Ornamental Horn Co - Importers of Foreign Horns & Manufacturers of Horn Novelties, no copyright date [estimate circa 1890], 20 pages, 5x7, stapled at spine, hand colored black/white engravings, Ornamental Horn Co, Chicago IL [printed by the Columbian Engraving Co]. This very scarce catalog features a quirky selection of household and decorative items made from animal horns (cattle, buffalo, kudu, gemsbok and springbok) and hooves including key racks, horns that also hold a thermometer and a calendar, “odor stands" (perfume stands with one or 2 glass stoppered bottles in horn holders), a footstool, smokers’ sets, a bouquet holder, inkstands, pincushion, a holder for a feather duster, etc. Also includes horns mounted on wood shields with plush and gold or silver trim, hunting horns (made to be blown), a horn violin (complete with f-holes), and drinking horns for fraternal societies. Custom orders could be placed for horns mounted with silver and gold. Novelties were made from American horns as well as horns imported from Africa, Brazil, Spain and Hungary. This original catalog is fully illustrated throughout with black/white engravings, many of which are hand colored and embellished with gold paint where appropriate.

Condition: Only Fair condition with heavy soil and fading to paper covers, covers 90% split at spine (barely holding at top), well-thumbed with light interior soil. Contents are complete, legible and free from underlining - a name is written in pencil at the bottom of last page but there is no other interior writing.
